David Favrod's 'Hikari'
Intermedia artist David Favrod works in the mediums of photography, video and installation. Born in Japan and currently based in Spain and Switzerland, the artist explores aspects of his bicultural background along with elements of historical or political significance. I was drawn to Hikari, a series of images that explores historical events in addition to facets of the artist's childhood. Historical events, such as the war, he didn't experience himself but nonetheless the stories told through generations influenced his consciousness as he grew up. Based largely on a single memorable conversation with his grandparents who experienced the war, the photographs in this series summon an imagined, reconstructed history based on his grandparents' memories. In a sense, he borrows their recollections and reshapes them into a personal testimony.
