The gorgeous subjects of these still-life images seem to float in mid-air or upon waves of black air or sea that melt into the black canvas. The dark grounds are so thickly and totally darkened that one feels as though the items we are looking at -- flowers, birds, grapes -- are being gradually sucked back into this void. I'm particularly drawn to the ghostly swaths of paint that drip or smear over the canvas, giving a spectral glimmer of form or even movement, but also of a sense of age, as if these flowers and birds have been suspended in space for centuries.
