Ryan Wallace: The Standard Model
I fell for this installation of The Standard Model, a series of works from 2015 by artist Ryan Wallace at Mark Moore Gallery, Los Angeles. The materiality of these surfaces, whether stacked blocks or suspended from the wall, is wonderfully compelling. They present the viewer with an extreme close-up in the way of materials and textures, but at the same time could just as well be the patterns produced by aerial or satellite photography, abstracted into brilliant, tactile form. The roughness belies Wallace's close attention to detail, neutral chromatic relationships, and the way the patterns 'feel.'
