Bigger + Better
Young Space was begun in 2014 while I was studying the history of art in Scotland, in order to highlight the artwork being made -- and the challenges faced -- by art students who were about to break into the real/art world. Since then, I've moved back to Wisconsin (and have now been here for two. whole. years.) and while I built up a project platform, networked the heck out of the creative community in the region, and collaborated on projects with numerous artists, the Young Space site fell by the wayside. With it went a valuable tool for connecting with artists and makers from around the world. So it's time to get it back up and running in the spirit of how it was begun.
Since Match Factory has gone the way of the Dodo, and other projects wind down, the current task is to revitalize Young Space and bring back its web presence with a beefed-up section for resources related to residencies, awards, and education opportunities. The blog will return to featuring work by emerging artists who do original work with a renewed emphasis on their process and their experiences. The aim is to assist other artists, students, and anyone considering a career in the arts to think realistically about what they can do to grow their practice -- or just get started.
Young Space will again accept submissions on a rolling basis for inclusion on the website. Submissions may include artwork, exhibitions, writing contributions, and other media. The new SUBMIT page above includes updated information. Additionally, the goal of the RESOURCES page will be to provide an ever-growing list of opportunities in a range of contexts. As it grows, it will be structured to be as useful and accessible as possible.
While Young Space is independently run, it is a collaborative process. Your ideas and contributions are encouraged and welcome!
