Yasmin Guimarães

Tell me a little bit about you!

I'm from Brazil, live and work in São Paulo, and also study fine arts at Belas Artes there.

Since I was at university I always knew that I would like to work as an artist, and while I was there I tried many things: sculptures, installation, drawings, and paintings... as long I was doing my things I was realizing what I was keen to do. For my graduate work, my research was about photography and painting. In that time I was wondering how to deal with both things together and there were 2 books; that was good for me at that time. And I saw a Luigi Ghirri exhibition too, which was good for me that time.

When did you first discover art, or realize you wanted to make it yourself?

Hum... I think it was from my memories; I always liked to draw and see the things in this. I used to spend my time doing things always...

What ideas are you exploring in your practice?

Nowadays I'm painting and I feel I'd like to start to draw again. I like to link things from art history in my paintings, like I like the idea of painting the wind, so I came across Calder sculptures.

What is your process like?

It depends... sometimes there's a work that takes time to get read. I'm a very intuitive person so  I deal with colors also, and there's some silent painting too.

Do you have a mentor, or a piece of advice (or both), which has influenced your practice?

Yes... that paintings have humor :)

Describe your studio.

My studio is in downtown and my workspace is next to a window with a beautiful light! And I share with 2 more artists!

What do you find most daunting, challenging, or frustrating about pursuing art?

The time when a work is ending... I like the unfinished process...

What are three words you would use to describe your work?

Air, perception, way

What do you do when you find yourself in a creative rut?

I like to draw as I said... for me, drawing is always a surprise, like I see a lot of my way to painting in this. I like to draw to see... and also photographing. I like to start a painting from a drawing, a letter, or a feeling, and also sometimes a painting comes from it.

What do you need or value most as an artist?

What keeps you creating?

My intuition

What are you working on right now?

Nowadays... some paintings and drawings in my notebook, as long as I live!
