An Irish artist now in Baltimore, MD, Bart O'Reilly earned an MFA from MICA and balances a painting practice with raising a family and trying not to spend too much time on Instagram (a challenge most of us probably face)!
Tell me a little bit about you!
I am from Ireland. Live in Baltimore, Maryland now. I have a BFA from NCAD in Dublin and an MFA from MICA Baltimore. I paint in my garage, I have two crazy boys and a beautiful wife who is also an artist.
When did you first discover art, or realize you wanted to make it yourself?
Painting a rock in elementary school. I was about 6.
What ideas are you exploring in your practice?
Trying to see how many things a painting can be and see how many things can be painting.
What is your process like?
My teaching is my research. I tidy the studio and then make it really messy. I work on as many things that fit in my space at a time. I'm interested in painting.
Do you have a mentor, or a piece of advice (or both), which has influenced your practice?
Don't edit yourself too much.
Describe your studio.
It's also my garage so it's constantly being reorganized around a lawnmower.
What do you find most daunting, challenging, or frustrating about pursuing art?
If you could sit down for dinner or a drink with anyone, who would it be and what would you chat about?
Mark Rothko. We would chat about painting!!
What are three words you would use to describe your work?
Colour, fabric, staining.
What do you do when you find yourself in a creative rut?
Sweep the studio floor.
What do you love most about your medium? What challenges or surprises you most about it?
Colour and water.

What keeps you creating?
What are you working on right now?
