Totally blown away by Alexander Shaw's fantastic paintings, which explore a grim world of unusual, sometimes grotesque characters. I love the way the figures within these canvases appear to be melting slowly before our eyes. Much at the links below!
Can you tell me a little bit about you?
My name is Alexander Shaw, based in Brooklyn- I attended MICA for my undergraduate degree , graduated in 2012. I am a painter and musician (LiL JaBBa). I’m fairly well known in the underground electronic music scene and have recently began trying to get out there more in the visual sphere.
When did you first discover art, or realize you wanted to make it yourself?
I have always drawn, but I really started getting into it when I became involved with street art around 2006. It gave me real drive to pursue an arts career
What ideas are you exploring in your practice?
My most recent work (not up on site just yet) explores a grim industrial world - I have several reoccurring characters who represent global moods, they are all my manifestations of feelings I’m receiving from everyone I know. I’m also interested in exploring the role of a painter in society these days and depicting our struggle to inspire.
What is your process like?
I typically do compositional drawings but most of the minutia materializes spontaneously along the way. A painting can take anywhere from a day to a year to complete, some paintings hang around nearly finished forever. I like to work on at least 3 paintings at a time . I really like barrels and how they represent industry, totems, dice, birds.
Do you have a mentor, or a piece of advice (or both), which has influenced your practice?
What is your studio like?
Packed with paintings and recording equipment- I practically live in here. There are some swords, vines, a pair of clown shoes.
What do you find most daunting, challenging, or frustrating about pursuing art?
Seeking exposure and getting past the periods when your painting looks hideous.
What are three words you would use to describe your work?
Big, hallucinogenic, world
What are you working on right now?
I have an EP being release in February so just finishing up my demos. I’m also prepping for a show I’m trying to put together at a space in Paris.
Anything else you would like to add?
Hope you enjoy, thanks for your time.
